- Ask yourself the purpose the computer will serve - Do you want to use it for internet/email, word processing, gaming, high end graphic editing, etc.
- Make a list of all the parts you want to include in your computer. Basic items you will need for every computer include : case, motherboard, processor and fan, hard drive, memory or RAM, video card, mouse and keyboard. That's about all you need to get started. Other optional parts include a CD Rom, or DVD Rom, CD or DVD burner, network card, sound card, upgraded video card.
- Shop around for the best prices on each item. You may be able to save money by buying different parts from different vendors. Many times certain online computer part stores will run specials on specific items. This can be more work and more time consuming but can save you a few extra dollars.
- Wait for the items to arrive. I would suggest that you wait for all the items to arrive before you start the building process.
- Once the items arrive start the process of building your computer.

Install the motherboard the motherboard will hold all the other parts of your computer. Install the processor and fan. Next, install the memory module or RAM. Now add your hard drive.

Plug the keyboard and mouse into the motherboard on the outside of the case. Attach the monitor to the video card from the outside of the case. Plug the network cable into the network card from the outside of the case.
