Computer Hard Drive
You can't have a computer these days without some type of electronic storage device.
About a hard drive
A hard drive is an computer part that allows users to save electronic data on a physical drive. Nearly every computer in existence today has at least one hard drive. Some servers and mainframes are directly or indirectly connected to hundreds of hard drives.
Hard drive storage capacity is measured in megabytes and gigabytes. There are 1,024 megabytes in a gigabyte. A PC hard drive physically measures about 3.5" and a laptop hard drive measures about 2.5".
There are internal hard drives and external hard drives both of which can be used with computers today. Internal hard drives as the name suggests are located inside the computer case away from everyday eyesight. External hard drives are connected to your computer outside the case usually through a USB cable or a firewire cable. Your computer communicates to your hard drive through buses. There are several buses used for this communication including ATA (IDE, EIDE), Serial ATA (SATA), SCSI, SAS, IEEE 1394, USB, and Fibre Channel.
Storage used to cost larger companies thousands of dollars. With the advancing technology storage continues to become cheaper. Today many free email services are offering email storage of over 2 gigabytes. This means you can store and save hundreds of pictures and videos on your email and never have to download them to your personal hard drive. You can have instant access to the files anywhere you can have an internet connection.
